SOLE SURVIVOR: FRAGILE GIRL WITHOUT LIFEBELT

Jul 02 2009

BAHIA BAKARI, THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF
COMOROS ISLANDS AIR CRASH, THAT CHEATED DEATH

LE BOURGET, Francia (AP) - The sole survivor of an air crash which killed 152 people sat up in her hospital bed yesterday as details of her astonishing escape were revealed.

Bahia Bakari clung to wreckage in shark-infested waters for more than 13 hours after being ejected from the doomed jet. The 14-year-old, who cannot swim and did not have a lifebelt, was alone in the water from 1:30 am as bodies and debris floated past. Her mother was among the dead. It was not until 3:00 pm that rescuers saw her bobbing up and down in the Indian Ocean.

She waved as they shone a torch from their boat but was unable to grasp a life ring and was hauled aboard. Bahia, shivering uncontrollably and suffering a broken collarbone, cuts, bruises and hypothermia, was given hot water and sugar before being taken to hospital. Surgeon Ben Imani said: “Her health is not in danger. She is very calm given the shock she has suffered.”

The other 152 people on the plane, including her mother and others from France's large Comoran community, are presumed dead. Up to now, rescuers had recovered only five bodies from the remaining 141 passengers and 11 crew yesterday. They have given up hope of finding any more survivors.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?

Rakhe krishna māre ke māre krishna rakhe ke : "He whom Krishna protects, no one can kill, but if Krishna wants to kill someone, no one can give him protection."

Teachings of Queen Kunti - Chapter 7 "

From the description of Gajendra, he apparently was aiming at the supreme authority although he did not know who the supreme authority is. He conjectured, "There is a supreme authority who is above everything." ... Although the demigods are in charge of maintaining different aspects of the universe, Gajendra thought that they were unable to rescue him. Harim vinā naiva mritim taranti: no one can rescue anyone from the dangers of birth, death, old age and disease. It is only the Supreme Personality of Godhead who can rescue one from the dangers of material existence. Therefore an intelligent person, to get free from this dangerous existence, approaches the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not any demigod. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (7.20), kāmais tais tair hrita jñānāh prapadyante 'nya-devatāh: those who are unintelligent approach the various demigods for temporary material benefits. Actually, however, these demigods cannot rescue the living entity from the dangers of material existence.
