PERU WILL HAVE A ‘CAR FREE DAY’

‘CAR FREE DAY’ PLANNED IN PERU
AND PROMOTE THE USE OF THE BIKE

LIMA (AFP) - Peru has declared a ‘National No Car Day’ on 22 September each year with the aim of promoting cycling as a means of sustainable transport, said on Friday the official gazette. The measure was established at a new law declaring the “national interest” the use of bicycles to be a “sustainable, safe, popular, ecological, economical and healthy” for transportation. Law 29593, published today in the journal of Legal Standards official gazette El Peruano, said that the September 22 of each year is declared as National Day without Car. According to the law, the Peruvian government took the promotion and broadcasting of cycling as an alternative means of transportation. In order to comply with this standard, it was set that the State encourages and promotes the use of bicycles in all levels of government. It also provides road and people safety conditions for the use of this means of transport and it has the duty to report annually to the public about the implementation of this law.

Local governments should include and promote cycling in the design of their large metropolitan areas. Peruvian authorities also undertake to build infrastructure in cities, to give them a unique urban roads for the movement of cyclists, and to facilitate the use and parking of bicycles as an alternative means of transport. Also, both public and private educational institutions as required to broadcast and promote the use of this way of transportation. However, to comply with this law, it is necessary to ensure the safety of cyclists with the implementation and construction of bicycle lanes to avoid accidents. The city of Lima, with eight million inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in Latin America and also one of the most polluted in the region due to the existence of a motorcar fleet which is over 25 years old and the use of highly polluting fuel.

Today is officially sanctioned in Peru the law that declares of national interest the use of bicycles as an alternative means of sustainable, safe, popular, ecological, economic and healthy means of transport, and promote its use. It's a nice piece of news that the use of bicycle as a healthy way of transportation has been supported by law. We must be careful about the environment and support those efforts directed towards finding renewable energies, avoiding by any means all types of environmental pollution.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?
Krishna is so kind that gives us His grace in the form of pure berry, nuts and fruits; but man, as a result of their greed, has transformed vast extensions of land into a desert, by cutting trees and he has become conspicuously rich due to these and other products. …. Do not make unnecessary trips in cars any more. Let us use the bike whenever possible. Walk more. Do not pollute the air. Make less use of plastic things. It is preferable to produce wooden toys for children and educate them to feel and love nature, teaching them about Mother Nature and Father Krishna. Participate actively in civic services such as planting trees in public places, provision of drinking water to passengers, cleaning of soiled areas, recycling of waste, protection against animal abuse, etc. We should see the power of God manifested in everything, and then to act with the utmost responsibility and care. Even a faucet that is leaking should be closed. We must save energy.
