‘EARTH HOUR’ TO BE MARKED TODAY BY TURNING OFF LIGHTS

EARTH HOUR 2011: GLOBAL LIGHTS-OUT EVENT
TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
www.slate.com - Are you ready for Earth Hour? The fifth annual global green event, hosted by the World Wildlife Fund, asks citizens around the world to shut off lights for one hour today Saturday, March 26, at 8:30 p.m. local time, to raise awareness about climate change.  Students, corporates and environmental activists in many cities around the world are all set to switch off lights from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday to observe Earth Hour.  The global movement in climate change, started by WWF, tries to create awareness of energy use and global warming by switching off non-essential lights for an hour.  Back in 2007, Sydney, Australia was the first city to darken its skies. In the years since, hundreds of millions of people in more than 100 countries have taken part.

And famous attractions around the world will go dark to support the cause.  Times Square, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Las Vegas Strip, Niagara Falls, the Opera House in Sydney, and many more landmarks around the world plan to douse the lights, according to Earth Hour’s website.  The annual initiative, organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is aimed at combating global warming and preserving the environment.  “Earth Hour calls for collective and individual action from all walks of life.
Earth Hour 2011 also calls for actions to sustain commitments and responsible actions beyond the hour.  This year’s mantra is Switch off for one hour and switch on a low carbon lifestyle” said Rachel Pearlin, state director, WWF-India.

Earth Hour 2011 is to be observed today between 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time - no matter what time zone you are in - by switching off lights to depict concern for climate change and global warming.  In order to create awareness about climate change millions of people around the world join a global call for direct action on climate change today.  It's of utmost importance to recuperate our capacity to value a way of life that is simple, healthful, and natural. It is also the only way to obtain health, beauty, youth, harmony, and prosperity.  The proposal of the wise is: “Simple Life with Elevated Thinking”.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?
Please, no more pain for Mother Earth!  We are part of the earth, and she is part of us.  The perfumed flowers are our sisters; the cow, horse, and great snake are our brothers. The rivers are our brothers and quench our thirst.  The air has priceless value.  We all share the same breath - the beast, the tree, man; all breathe the same air, and it shares its essence with the life that it sustains.  The freshness of the air, the force of the waters, the mighty pine tree, every grain of sand at the beach, every drop of dew in the forest, the sap that runs through the trees, even the sound of the insects sustain and soothe the lives of humankind on this planet.  The biological wellbeing of our earth, and the future of mankind are being ruined by the materialistic vision of society.
