RAIN OF ‘BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS' SOAKED BRITAIN

HEAVY RAIN DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS HAS LEFT
HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE SHELTERING IN RESCUE CENTRES
England (Reuters) - Amount expected during the entire month of November has fallen in 24 hours across northern England and southern Scotland. Torrential rain of “biblical proportions” caused serious flooding across northern England and southern Scotland. Flood defences in Cumbrian towns were overwhelmed by unprecedented downpours that officials said could be expected only once in 1,000 years. The unprecedented deluge destroyed flood defences in northern England that had been built only four years ago.

The Meteorological Office said the amount of rain expected during the entire month of November had fallen in 24 hours, with the Environment Agency reporting 314 millimetres had fallen in one area that it said was a record for England. Lifeboats and Royal Air Force helicopters were used to rescue hundreds of people from their homes in towns and villages across the picturesque Lake District. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited flood-hit Cumbria in north west England on Saturday to see the damage caused by record rainfall and pay tribute to a policeman who died when a bridge collapsed. Brown paid tribute to Police Constable Bill Barker, 44, who died after being swept down river when a bridge he had been directing motorists away from the crumbling structure on the River Derwent when the bridge collapsed underneath him. "I'm sorry about the loss of PC Bill Barker, and I know he was a very brave and heroic man," he said. Britain has been hit by severe flooding in recent years, raising questions about the impact of global warming. Last year Britain saw its wettest summer since records began in 1914 while floods in 2007 affected 55,000 homes and businesses.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?
By the order and wrath of Indra, the master of all the higher subtle elements, heavy rain began to fall. ... So the helpless - the women, children, and animals of Vrndavana - had no alternative but to take refuge of Krishna. They all came to Krishna for relief. They cried, "O Krishna! Now what are we to do? … Seeing this, Krishna had much pity for them. … At that time, with only one hand Krishna lifted up the Govardhana mountain. For Him, it was a very easy thing; with only one hand, He uprooted the hill and lifted it up as a child lifts a toy ball. And holding up that great mountain, Krishna gave protection to all those who were living in Gokula. The men, women, and children of Vrndavana brought the cows and all their worldly goods and took shelter beneath Govardhana Hill.
